WHAT SHOULD AMERICAN STUDENTS KNOW ABOUT MOROCCO

MAGIC CARPET RIDE THROUGH MOROCCO

PROJET  D’EXCELLENCE 2007

OBJECTIVE

WHAT WILL STUDENTS BE ABLE TO DO? WHAT WILL STUDENTS KNOW AFTER YOUR LESSON?

-          Students will be able to write some Arabic Alphabet, perform Moroccan dancing, write a creative ending to a Moroccan tale, do a Moroccan fashion show.

-          Students will know some facts about Morocco: location, traditions, cuisine, handicraft… and other things linked to such an exotic land.

ASSESSMENT

HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHETHER STUDENTS HAVE MADE PROGRESS TOWARD YOUR OBJECTIVE? HOW AND WHEN WILL YOU ASSESS MASTERY?

-          Students’ progress can be assessed by verifying their understanding through trivia question game, a culture quiz (true/false or Choose the odd one out)

-          The assessment process can take place at the same time during all the activities implemented, but also at the end of the workshop.

KEY POINTS

WHAT THREE-FIVE KEY POINTS WILL YOU EMHASIZE?

-          Traditions

-          Cuisine

-          Inter-cultural understanding

OPENING

HOW WILL YOU COMMUNICATE WHAT YOU WILL TEACH? HOW WILL YOU COMMUNICATE ITS IMPORTANCE? HOW WILL YOU ENGAGE STUDENTS AND CAPTURE INTERESTS?

-          The procedure that will be used in this workshop will be multi-step. We will start with an expository one: a power point presentation plus some realia (clothes, musical instruments, tea items). We will then go through an interactive procedure inviting students to take part in the workshop: fashion show, dancing, shopping at a souk.

-          The interest of the students will be of course captured by: varying the activities, making them participate actively and raising their curiosity to ask questions and make comparisons.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL

WHAT KEY POINTS WILL YOU EMPHASIZE AND REITERATE? HOW WILL YOUENSURE THOSE STUDENTS ACTIVELY TAKE THE INFORMATION? WHICH POTENTIAL MISUNDERSTANDING WILL YOU ANTICIPATE?

-          The key points to be emphasized are: culture and understanding

-          The students will take the information by being responsible for most of the activities as these will be learner-centered.

-          Some areas of potential misunderstanding might be religion, customs and some behavioral patterns.

GUIDED PRACTICE AND/OR INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

HOW WILL YOU CLEARLY STATE AND MODEL WHAT YOU EXPECT THE STUDENTS TO DO TO PRACTICE WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED? HOW WILL YOU MONITOR AND CORRECT STUDENT PERFORMANCE?

-          The fact of adopting the following procedure in this workshop: engaging, studying and activating will help students move from one point to another smoothly. It will also help them understand the culture of Morocco through doing.

-          Student performance can be monitored by keeping students learning and on task.

CLOSING

HOW WILL STUDENTS SUMMARIZE WHAT THEY LEARNED? HOW WILL STUDENTS BE ASKED TO STATE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WHAT THEY LEARNED?

-          A comparison procedure will be used. Students will be required to come up with sentences like: in America people speak ……, but in Morocco………….; In America people eat………….., in Morocco………………;

-           Students could state the significance of what they learned through a consciousness of the globalization process. Young people all over the world have different physical appearances but have the same interests in sports, the same worries about the future, the same love of music…

An American teacher visited me in Morocco for six weeks. She team taught with me. I am visiting USA for six weeks too to go through the same experience.
